Cork oak, a tree native to the western Mediterranean region, is a fascinating plant that has been treasured for centuries for its versatile and sustainable cork. This unique plant tissue is composed of millions of microscopic cells containing an air-like gas, and other compounds like ceroids, tannins, and polysaccharides. Each cubic centimetre of cork contains approximately 40 million cells, while a single natural cork can hold up to a staggering 800 million cells.
A green process that protects the trees.
The harvesting of cork is an environmentally friendly process, as cork oaks can be harvested every nine years without harming the tree. However, the tree must be at least 25 years old to yield the first cork, and it takes up to three harvests for the quality of the cork to improve. The best time to harvest is between May and August, during the tree's most active growth phase, to ensure that the cork has the right thickness and quality.
The only tree that can regenerate its bark.
The cork oak is the only tree species in the world that can regenerate its bark, which develops a smooth structure after each harvest. It can be harvested around 17 times over its lifespan of about 200 years, providing a sustainable source of cork. Specialised professionals are needed to carry out the harvest, ensuring that the tree remains healthy and continues to produce high-quality cork.
