The story of cork

Discover the remarkable qualities of this sustainable material sourced from the cork oak tree. From its lightweight and insulating properties to its impact resistance and natural texture, cork offers a unique blend of functionality and aesthetics.

The natural source of a remarkable material.

Cork oak, a tree native to the western Mediterranean region, is a fascinating plant that has been treasured for centuries for its versatile and sustainable cork. This unique plant tissue is composed of millions of microscopic cells containing an air-like gas, and other compounds like ceroids, tannins, and polysaccharides. Each cubic centimetre of cork contains approximately 40 million cells, while a single natural cork can hold up to a staggering 800 million cells.

A green process that protects the trees.

The harvesting of cork is an environmentally friendly process, as cork oaks can be harvested every nine years without harming the tree. However, the tree must be at least 25 years old to yield the first cork, and it takes up to three harvests for the quality of the cork to improve. The best time to harvest is between May and August, during the tree's most active growth phase, to ensure that the cork has the right thickness and quality.

The only tree that can regenerate its bark.

The cork oak is the only tree species in the world that can regenerate its bark, which develops a smooth structure after each harvest. It can be harvested around 17 times over its lifespan of about 200 years, providing a sustainable source of cork. Specialised professionals are needed to carry out the harvest, ensuring that the tree remains healthy and continues to produce high-quality cork.

  • Hypoallergenic & non-toxic

Cork is an excellent choice for those susceptible to allergies, as it protects against airborne particles. It is safe to use for people with asthma and other allergies. It does not release any dangerous compounds.

  • Eco-friendly harvesting

Cork is harvested from the outer bark of cork oak trees without harming the tree, making it an eco-friendly and sustainable material. The tree is not cut down, and the bark regenerates itself, allowing for future harvests.

  • Water-resistant

Thanks to its unique cellular structure and composition, cork is fully waterproof and mostly impervious to gases.

  • Natural to the touch

Cork's natural texture combines softness and flexibility with a naturally uneven surface that varies depending on the type of cork used and the chosen finish.

  • Recyclable

Cork is highly recyclable and environmentally friendly, making it one of its most significant strengths from tree to end-product.

  • Cruelty-Free

Cork is a plant-based material, and its harvesting does not involve any animal products or testing, making it a cruelty-free option for those who seek ethical and sustainable materials.

  • Lightweight

With more than 50% of its volume consisting of air, cork is exceptionally lightweight and can even float on water.

  • Elastic and compressible

Thanks to its elasticity, cork can adapt to changes in temperature and pressure without suffering physical changes.

  • Natural habitat

Cork oak forests support a diverse range of flora and fauna, providing a natural habitat for many animals. The unique habitat created by these forests is essential to the survival of several endangered species, making cork harvesting a vital part of their conservation.
